The San Diego County Track Starters Association is the organization certified by the CIF to work high school track & field meets. Every week during the Cross Country and T&F seasons, dozens of high school meets take place across the county, each staffed by a SDCTSA starter. Working with SDCTSA is a great way to give back to the sport, to interact with exceptional coaches and remarkable high school student-athletes, and to watch great competition, all while getting paid. Unfortunately, there are barely enough starters to cover all the meets, and the SDCTSA would welcome anyone with a passion for the sport to join the organization. As per CIF guidelines, a candidate would need to attend online meetings and pass a written test to become eligible to work meets. There are annual dues, and a starter must acquire their own equipment. New starters will be mentored by an experienced starter until they are comfortable working on their own.
USATF membership is required to compete in preliminary or championship meets. An athlete may compete as an individual (unattached) or as a member of a club. Clubs are located throughout San Diego and Imperial counties. For a list of local clubs and contact information, go to the Clubs page ("Find a Club" then filter on the San Diego-Imperial Association). For a table of practice sites for local clubs, click here.
