The Summer Nights Track and Field Series was founded by Paul Greer out of frustration at that time when Point Loma Nazarene College threatened to cut its track program. Greer gathered a group of prominent coaches in the area at his office at San Diego City College, where he served as the USATF San Diego Association Long Distance Chairman. At that meeting Greer stood in front of these influential track and field leaders and proposed they start a summer track series which debuted as three meets in 2010. The next year the series added a fourth event and in 2018 the Summer Nights Track and Field Series expanded its events to offer one all comers track and field event every month from December through July. In 2025 the series offers 9 events throughout the year. Each meet is only 2 hours long and costs a mere $10 and automatic timing is provided at all Summer Nights Track events. The grassroots approach provides this track and field series a friendly and fun atmosphere for all ages and abilities to enjoy and participate in. The goal of the series is rebuilding the sport from the ground up. The series also creates a community atmosphere and what develops is a spirit of good sportsmanship with one another.
